PGMOL chief Webb stands by VAR decision on Gordon goal
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Nov 15 (Reuters) - Referees body (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb said there was no conclusive evidence available for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to disallow Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle United against Arsenal earlier this month. "The ball then comes over and Joelinton challenges Gabriel (Magalhaes), and it could be a foul, might be a foul. The VAR decides that the evidence from the footage isn't clear enough to intervene with a recommendation for a review for a clear error. The VAR went through that diligently and identified no clear evidence to intervene to overturn the goal. However, Webb said VAR fell short during Wolverhampton Wanderers game against Newcastle last month.

Nov 11 (Reuters) - Arsenal beat struggling Burnley 3-1 to move level on points with leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday after Tottenham Hotspur slipped to a last-gasp loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko scored in Arsenal's victory which lifted them above Spurs to second in the table, level on 29 points with Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Arsenal's afternoon was slightly soured by substitute Fabio Vieira being shown a straight red card but manager Mikel Arteta, who blasted officials after the loss to Newcastle United a week earlier, gave the referees high marks. A goal in the 59th minute from defender Victor Lindelof earned United a 1-0 win over Luton and secure a second successive league victory. Idrissa Gueye scored four minutes from time to earn Everton a breathless win at Selhurst Park.

The South Korean international winger scored the second-half winner in a shock 2-1 victory that ended champions City's perfect start to the season. "Always we struggle at Wolves and when you see the quality individually that they have, especially up front with (Pedro) Neto, with (Matheus) Cunha, with the Korean guy, they are really, really good," Guardiola had told reporters in his Friday press conference. The omission of Hwang's name was noted, and Wolves made sure it was spelled out when he scored -- posting his picture on social media with the caption "The Korean Guy". "We needed to find a way to be solid and have enough attacking players to carry us up the pitch. We prepped for the game really well," Wolves manager Gary O'Neil told the BBC.

No financial details were disclosed but British media reported that City paid Wolves about 53 million pounds ($67.20 million) for the 25-year-old. Nunes had been absent from training with the squad, Wolves manager Gary O'Neil said, after Wolves rejected City's initial 47 million pounds bid. Wolves signed the Brazilian-born Nunes last August for a then club-record transfer fee of 45 million euros ($48.83 million) from Sporting on a five-year contract. The midfielder made 34 Premier League appearances for Wolves last season and started their first two league games this term.

Officials excluded from PL fixtures after penalty error
  + stars: | 2023-08-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Wolves were convinced they should have had a penalty in added time, after United goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic in trying to deal with a cross. Hooper was the on-field referee and Salisbury and West were tasked with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties. "Jon Moss said it was a blatant penalty and should have been given - fair play to him, he apologised," O'Neil told reporters. But fair play to Jon for coming out and saying it was a clear and obvious error - he couldn't believe the on-field referee didn't give it and can't believe VAR didn't intervene. Salisbury was also dropped for a round of fixtures in April after Brighton & Hove Albion were denied a penalty in a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Bournemouth out of relegation zone with 2-1 win over Fulham
  + stars: | 2023-04-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
April 1 (Reuters) - Marcus Tavernier and Dominick Solanke were both on target as Bournemouth earned a vital 2-1 win over high-flying Fulham on Saturday to breathe life into the south-coast club's fight for Premier League survival. Solanke bundled home in the 79th minute to seal a remarkable comeback that lifted Bournemouth out of the relegation zone and dealt a blow to Fulham's hopes of playing in Europe next season. Andreas Pereira gave Fulham the lead in the 16th minute after running on to Harrison Reed's layoff, but the visitors failed to build on that early momentum. Antonee Robinson nearly put Fulham 2-0 up eight minutes later but his vicious half-volley cannoned off the crossbar to let Bournemouth off the hook. The victory lifted Bournemouth from second-bottom of the table to 15th place on 27 points, while Fulham stayed ninth.
All three sides are nine points off the top four, with Chelsea having played 20 games to Liverpool and Brentford's 19 apiece. Chelsea are now without a win in their last six league games on the road, their longest comparable run in the competition since September-December 2015. "We defended in the second half with passion and clear organisation, but we were too deep in these moments. Everton offered little in attack, with away supporters again calling for the club's board to resign throughout the clash. They have collected just 15 points from their 20 league this season -- their fewest points won after 20 games of any league campaign in their history.

Slick Bournemouth outclass struggling Everton again

BOURNEMOUTH, England, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Bournemouth thumped Everton for the second time this week as goals from Marcus Tavernier, Kieffer Moore and substitute Jaidon Anthony gave them a 3-0 win at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday in their final Premier League game before the World Cup. The result lifted Bournemouth up to 13th on 16 points and piled the pressure on Frank Lampard, with his Everton side hovering one point above the relegation zone in 17th after an alarming slide in form. The boys maintained it for 90 minutes," interim Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil said. Seven minutes later, Pickford parried Philip Billing's volley and Tavernier nodded the rebound back across goal, where Moore out-muscled Everton defender Vitaliy Mykolenko to power it over the line. West Ham see off Bournemouth 2-0 amid VAR controversy
  + stars: | 2022-10-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - West Ham United defender Kurt Zouma's headed goal and a Said Benrahma penalty in stoppage time sealed a 2-0 win over Bournemouth in a scrappy Premier League tussle that was marked by VAR controversy at the London Stadium on Monday. There was precious little else for either set of fans to get excited about as West Ham held onto their lead despite some nervy moments as Bournemouth finished strongly. After a check by VAR it was deemed that the accidental handball had not directly led to the goal. West Ham were unable to make the game safe, however, until another contentious decision went their way. Bournemouth did not really offer much in the way of attacking threat and, while West Ham had some breaks, manager David Moyes said his side deserved the points.
